Developing websites for Pocket PC can be a timeconsuming and frustrating business. The implementation of HTML provided by Pocket Internet Explorer is quite limited: the memory size constraints means that many features that can be taken for granted in desktop browsers just aren't there. Important constraints include limited support for styling of elements and construction of dynamic pages.
Through our development of browser-based XML authoring applications for Pocket PC we've learned most of the problems, and many of the solutions and workarounds. And although the HTML may be limited, the implementations of Javascript and XML/XSL are very capable.
XSL is a powerful tool when designing and building websites for Pocket PC. Wherever possible we recommend serving pages as XML and using XSL stylesheets to format them for display, instead of attempting to code up large amounts of HTML. XSL can be used to build re-usable page subcomponents, leading to more compact, reliable and maintainable code. It can also be used to relieve some of the constraints on user interface design caused by lack of dynamic HTML.
